Md. Mahbubur Rahman

Youth is the change maker and the driver of tomorrow’s world. Any positive change is possible by the active part of youth. The future world and its beautification relies on youth. So every year there are a different youth conferences around the world to flourish the potentialities of the youth, to make them aware of their rights and responsibilities to the world and the generations to come. Here we would find out some such sorts of conferences which is going to be held for the youth and their capacity building. The World Youth Congress is one of them which takes place bi-annually and brings together youth activists with professionals from governments, UN Agencies and international NGOs. The Congress will bring together hundreds of young people (age 18-30) from around the world. They will include young development activists, young media professionals, young educators, young artists, young entrepreneurs, young health professionals, disadvantaged young people, young athletes for development, virtual delegates, and young environmentalists.

The main goals of the Congress are:

To promote youth led development as a constructive and effective way to make poverty history,

To accelerate momentum towards the achievement of the MDGs

To encourage the development of green, sustainable entrepreneurship

The Congresses have a strong educational component, including skills workshops, round table discussions and a community action component where delegates work on local projects in the host country and share best practice. The 6th World Youth Congress will be held in Rio de Janeiro in 2012. Here goes the link for knowing details: http://wycrio2012.org/.

Another prestigious conference for youth would be held at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA from February 17-20, 2012. This conference would mainly shed light on the Asia because in the past century, Asia has captivated the world’s attention with its ability to preserve ancient traditions while still adapting to the modern times. In particular, rapid growth and development experienced in countries like China and India have changed international dynamics. As Asia becomes increasingly more influential with each country striving to make its mark in the global arena, they face new challenges and are confronted with new domestic and international issues. How will countries respond to issues such as the threat of nuclear proliferation in North Korea and Pakistan’s critical role in global counter-terrorism efforts? How can they balance economic growth and environmentalism? What role should the media and entrepreneurs play in shaping politics and the economies in these countries? By addressing these questions in a forum of open debate, the HPAIR 2012 Harvard Conference hopes to stimulate discussion concerning these significant questions. Just as Asian countries work towards building a more vibrant future, by reflecting on the successes and failures of the past and assessing relations with other countries, delegates will utilize their past experiences to build the future, a pursuit that will prove critical for success.

The Harvard Project for Asian and International Relations will also arrange another conference for the youth which would be held be held in Taipei in 2012, hosted by National Chengchi University. As Harvard’s largest annual student connection in Asia, the Harvard Project for Asian and International Relations creates a forum of exchange and facilitates discussion of the most important economic, political, and social issues relevant to the Asia-Pacific region. Since 1991, the annual HPAIR conferences have brought together students from the world’s foremost universities and leaders in the fields of government, business, culture, and academia.

Continuing its tradition of academic excellence, the Harvard Conference seeks to create a rigorous forum for dialogue and exchange. The 2012 conference will invite both international students and Harvard students to come together in February for four days. With the theme of “Cross Cultural Connections: Weaving New Silk Roads”, conference attendees will explore pertinent issues concerning the Asia region, including foreign policy, public health, environmental issues, media, and entrepreneurship. Attendees will have the opportunity to investigate these issues in-depth through plenary sessions, panel sessions, seminars, and case-studies. For knowing details about these two conferences, this link will be helpful: http://www.hpair.org/.

2012-2013 Near East & South Asia Undergraduate Exchange Program is one of the most prestigious youth program totally funded by the US State Department highlighting to the building a responsible youth who will be the change maker of the world by their virtue of knowledge and respect to other culture. The Near East and South Asia Undergraduate Exchange Program, NESA UGRAD, is a part of GLOBAL UGRAD, a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, U.S. Department of State.

The “International Conference on Climate Change and Humanity2012” is another esteemed conference for the youth. ICCCH is an international forum for state-of-the-art research in Climate Change and Humanity. International Conference on Climate Change and Humanity (ICCCH 2012) will be held in Singapore during February 26-28, 2012. It is one of the leading international conferences for presenting novel and fundamental advances in the fields of Climate Change and Humanity. It also serves to foster communication among researchers and practitioners working in a wide variety of scientific areas with a common interest in improving Climate Change and Humanity related techniques. All submissions will be peer reviewed and evaluated based on originality, technical and/or research content/depth, correctness, relevance to conference, contributions, and readability. Submissions will be chosen based on technical merit, interest, applicability, and how well they fit a coherent and balanced technical program.

23rd International Youth Leadership Conference which would be held in Prague would pave a new way for the youth to test their leadership skills. Our week-long youth forum on world politics, international relations and justice will give you an opportunity to test your leadership skills, debate current issues, deliver speeches, draft resolutions, make executive decisions, and realize through experience the complexities of international relations. The main objective of the International Youth Leadership Conference is to facilitate an exchange of ideas across an ethnically diverse and socially responsible group of young international leaders. Their interaction provokes communication and dialogue that, throughout the week, provides an unparalleled learning experience and cross-cultural adventure.

Finally, youth conference is indeed a nice way to build worldwide networking and dream for a prosperous world by minimizing cultural gaps. By taking part in any of these youth conferences or others unmentioned, youth can rethink about them, their responsibility to the world and sustainable environment.

A Quiz Competition to Remember

Redwan Bin Abdul Baten

Do you know why you go to school? Or why your parents suddenly become the bad guys when it comes to your education? Or why your teachers seem like aliens from Knowledge land who just know one word, Study Study Study…… Yes, we often wonder, why in the name of Allah, do we have to go through this process! IT IS JUST SO BORING!

On the other hand, the cool thing is Entertainment, right? Yeah, now you’re talking! Watching TV, cartoons and movies, listening to you iPod, playing video games, playing ekka dokka with your buddies, just hanging around with your friends, going through those juicy comic books…the list goes on and on. NOW THAT’S COOL!

Hey, what’s wrong with these two paragraphs? Read again, Boring…and Cool… Wow! No wonder I feel like a loser some times! Guyz, this is the true and brutal reality. The one thing that should have been guiding us to enlightment, that should have been our best friend in all our activities, has become a villain to us. On the other hand, the thing that should have been the source of pleasure and refreshment, which should have acted as a booster to our energy and stamina, has taken up an unusual amount of time and space in our lives. That’s why our parents start screaming the moment we begin to relax. The end result, we have become robots which the scientists are trying so hard to develop but are foolish enough not to notice that the robots have already been created in the corridors of our schools!

Now, realizing this fact, some people started to wonder about the way out of this gloomy situation. The question was: How to make knowledge entertaining? They kept thinking and thinking until suddenly some guy came up with the word, ‘KNOWLENTAINMENT’. Now what kind of a word is that? It sounds like he made the mistake of uttering two words at once. Well, that is how genius is created! He had just conquered the unsolvable equation. And as an obvious procedure of history, that guys name was forgotten accordingly…..

Ok, then what does Knowlentainment look like? Let us picture it together. Well, it seems to look like a stage filled with some chairs, a big screen and a projector, a guy with a mike and some cards in his hands, some confusing looking kids biting their nail off and perspirating wildly….

Well, this scene actually took place a few days back. Wow, Knowlentainment is actually taking place and we don’t know about it! That’s unfair…. Ok ok guyz; please let me tell you the story first. The event took place at Manarat Dhaka International College. Your favorite organization,’ Youth Wave Student Society’ actually came up with the idea of Knowlentainment and decided to organize a Quiz competition. So, up came the event of, 1st Inter-class Quiz Competition. As you may guess, a huge hype was created among the brilliant students of Manarat. A total number of 57 teams registered to take part in the competition. Each team got to choose its own name.

The competition took place in 3 phases. At first, a written exam was taken which was held on the 28th of October. After class the students took part in the exam. The honorable teachers of Manarat presided over the exam. Next stop, selection round. This was the first time the Manaratians got to get a look at the real picture of Knowlentainment. The 54 selected teams were divided into 9 groups, each of 6 teams. The day began with the girls from 5th grade participating in the first round. Each team introduced themselves and the programme started. The moderator began to ask each team their allotted questions. The teams were a bit shaky at the beginning but soon they began to understand the format. And once they started to settle down, they really enjoyed the programme.

The questions were set in such a way that the students got to learn a lot of information from them. Actually that was the theme of the competition, to inform the kids, not to make them feel that they know less. Actually, it was a quiz based on practical life and its parts. The facts that the students know as a matter of fact, were just given an institutionalized form. When the pictures of the most common personalities around us were shown, that’s when the contestants really got their brains to work. Each team tried very, very hard to answer the questions. But sometimes even the easiest of the questions got them into a tricky situation, because the answers were playing hide and seek with their minds! Yes, this happened on a number of occasions when everyone else on the stage and audience were raising their hands with the correct answer except the certain team. This was a very common phenomenon at the Quiz.

Well, after a day long of Quizzing, only 6 teams out of the 54 were chosen for the grand finale. The grand finale and prize giving ceremony took place on the 4th of November, Thursday, after classes ended. It was truly a magnificent event. The stage was decorated beautifully and there were the handsome and juicy trophies on the table. The contestants for a while forgot about the tension when the trophy was revealed in front of them. Well, the Finale started with recitation from the Holy Quran. Then, began the most exciting round of Quizzing the Manaratians had seen yet. The 6 teams began fighting for their blood and truly, it was a fight worth it.

Knowlentainment aims at bringing out the best from each human, who is seeking the true path. And the true path can never be achieved with a scattered effort. Knowledge, spirituality, entertainment, discipline, leadership… all these have to be concentrated at one pint and only then can enlightment come. Knowlentainment aims at doing just that.

The participants developed these qualities bit by bit throughout the tournament. Leadership is a natural quality which flourishes according to situation. At a crisis moment, when the team was searching with their lives an answer, one out of the three always came out as the leader. It was beautiful and encouraging to watch.

At last, after 1 hour of rigorous quizzing, the results were ready. Team ‘Illuminati’ from 9th grade took the position of runners-up. And surprise, surprise! Team ‘Knowledge Warriors’, from 5th grade became Champions! Yes readers, a team of little guys defied all odds and secured the top position. This again proves that knowledge has no boundaries. Whoever you are, whatever your age or size may be, you can come out as the winner if you have the knowledge.

The prize giving ceremony followed accordingly with the Vice Chancellor of Manarat International University, Professor Dr. Mohammad Abdur Rob as the chief guest. In his speech the honorable sir put emphasis on developing leadership qualities among the youth of today. He also gave much importance to the moral qualities along with patriotism. The honorable principal of Manarat Dhaka International College, Colonel Z R M Ashraf Uddin (Retd.) in his speech thanked Youth Wave Student Society for arranging such a competition. He also urged his students to work harder on acquiring the true facts of knowledge. We, on our behalf, thank the Principal of Manarat College and the teachers for giving us the opportunity to arrange such a programme on such a large scale. Without their help and kind consideration, it would not have been possible.

We would also like to thank all our volunteers who worked tirelessly to implement the different responsibilities of the competition. The president of Youth Wave Student Society, Mr. Abdullah Al Mashud and secretary, Mr. Moniruzzaman Monir gave the necessary directions to run the programme smoothly. Our heartiest thanks to them also. A photo session of the participants holding up their grand trophies was done, followed by an interview of the winning teams.

Well readers that was the first experience of Knowlentainment. Youth Wave is coming to your campus very soon with similar but more enriched programmes. Start preparing. Thank you Manarat again and remember, KNOWLENTAINMENT……..
